Lisa and Andrew in Zhiziluo. Zhiziluo was the capital of the Nu River Lisu Ethnic Group Autonomous County from 1949 to 1972 or so. It was built as a model communist town, with attractive socialist buildings. Around 1972, government engineers decided that if any more buildings were built, the town would slide from its perch high on a mountain down into the river, so everyone was evacuated, and the capital moved to Liuku. 10 years later, the town still hadn't fallen into the river, so about a thousand members of the Lisu and Nu ethnic groups returned to live in the abandoned buildings. Fascinating simply as a peek into the 1950s and 60s ideal Chinese city (most such places have now become 21st-century ideal Chinese cities), also for the guts and resourcefulness of the Nu and Lisu people living there now.
